Microsoft’s Windows Store has reach an important milestone: it now includes more than 100,000 apps for the Windows 8 operating system. Steve Ballmer predicted the store would hit 100,000 in July, and it appears he was correct.
The Verge’s Tom Warren reported, “While Microsoft didn’t quite hit 100,000 in time for its Build developers conference last week, the software giant is announcing its latest milestone for Windows 8 today. The Windows Store has just passed the 100,000 mark, roughly eight months after Windows 8 went on sale in October. CEO Steve Ballmer had anticipated a total of 100,000 apps in time for July at Build, and that figure has been achieved just in time.”
ZDNet’s Steve Ranger explained, “Unlike traditional desktop apps, a Windows Store app has a single, chromeless window that fills the entire screen. Once downloaded, Windows Store apps appear as a tile on the Windows 8 Start screen, which means they can show new information to users even when they aren’t running.”
Ubergizmo’s Daniel Perez noted, “Microsoft’s Windows Store for Windows 8 reaching 100,000 within eight months is pretty fast when compared to how long it took its Windows Phone Store to reach that mark, which was approximately 18 months after its release.”
Engadget’s Alexis Santos added, “Redmond may not best its competitors in the sheer number of applications available on their respective storefronts, but it did manage to rack up the apps much faster. While it took roughly a year and a half for Apple’s App Store to score the same badge, and approximately two trips around the sun for the Android Market, the Windows Store has arrived at the figure in just eight months.”
