Oracle has announced the first major update to its Exalytics in-memory database appliance. The system now has twice as much memory, plus expanded storage capabilities.

V3’s Shaun Nichols reported, “Oracle has updated its Exalytics in-memory database platform. The company said that the Exalytics X3-4 appliances would sport improvements to both hardware and software features including increased flash and hard disk storage as well as new business intelligence and analysis tools.”

EnterpriseAppsToday’s Sean Michael Kerner added, “Paul Rodwick, VP of product management for Oracle Exalytics, explained to Enterprise Apps Today that the Exalytics system works with existing information management systems and both structured and unstructured data sources. Exalytics is an in-memory analytics system and will identify what data should be pulled into memory. With the Exalytics X3-4, Oracle is doubling the main memory of the system to 2 TB of RAM. The new system also delivers 2.4 TB of flash storage and 5.4 TB of traditional spinning disk hard drive storage.”

eWeek quoted Rodwick, who said, “We recognize that companies have vast estates of data that could be analyzed, including now for Hadoop (for big data load batch processing). Not everything’s going to fit into memory. Companies are doing more and more query reporting analysis, planning-type applications, and so on. Exalytics is designed to get all the right data into memory for an overall best experience. With double the RAM to 2TB, that really helps.”

The Register’s Timothy Prickett Morgan noted, “The hardware for this appliance costs $135,000 with premier support running $16,200 per year. This does not include the cost of the TimesTen database software or the Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation that is required on it.”
