With most IT job types, salaried jobs hold a clear majority over hourly or contractual ones. Not so with PC and network support technicians, for whom there are about equal numbers of each, according to dice.com, EarthWeb’s online job board for IT professionals. This suggests that more and more IT leaders are outsourcing non-core functions, a practice expected to become common as the labor crisis worsens.
Whether paid by the hour or the year, the fact remains that PC and network support pros garner lower-than-average wages on the high tech pay scale. They are offered an average salary of $53,500 per year and an average contract rate of $28 per hour. But that doesn’t tell you much, since the fatness of their wallet depends entirely on their responsibilities. Support managers and project leaders rake it in, with an average salary of $81,000 per year, compared with $47,000 for customer and tech support pros. Contract rates from one job type to the next show even more of a spread, from a low of $25 per hour (business analysts and modelers) to a high of $63 per hour (once again, managers and project leaders).
Regionally crunched, the numbers find Silicon Valley and New York at the top of the list for PC and network support, each with 22% of dice.com’s available jobs of this type. Highest salaries range from $130,000 to $145,000 per year, and the lowest positions pay around $27,000.
Averages are based on 584 listings on dice.com, with cities and job types bearing fewer than 10 listings excluded from mention. Data came from available jobs listed during October 2000. Results are based on averages or totals from the following information: salary, job type, job skills, and location.
