Sysdig Raises $10.7M for Container Monitoring

Sysdig, a tech startup with offices in San Francisco and Davis, Calif., announced today that the company had raised $10.7 million in a Series A round of funding headed by Accel and Bain Capital Ventures. The company specializes in monitoring and alerting software for app container platforms like Docker. To date, the company has raised $13 million.

The company’s “container native” technology, called ContainerVision, fills the gap between traditional IT monitoring tools and containerized environments powered by Docker, CoreOS and Mesos, according to CEO and founder Loris Degioanni. The company considers itself as a provider of “monitoring as a microservice.”

“Containers are by their very nature dynamic, isolated, lightweight, and portable,” said Degioanni in a July 14 announcement. “But these same characteristics also make containers impractical to monitor with traditional, agent-based methods.” His company’s monitoring platform, dubbed Sysdig Cloud and also launched today, “respects the core principles of containers and enables their core benefits,” he asserted.

In a separate blog post, Degioanni revealed that Sysdig Cloud has already gathered 30 paying customers. He described the solution as “the first and only container-native monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting solution, designed from the ground up to provide unprecedented visibility into modern, containerized infrastructures.”

The agentless, zero-configuration tool can “monitor your entire architecture from its own stand-alone container, with zero configuration, and yet still offer deep visibility into every other service running in your environment,” he continued. Capabilities include real-time performance monitoring, a DVR-like replay of evens and dynamic topology mapping.

Alex Polvi, CEO of CoreOS, noted that the industry is hungry “for a tool like Sysdig’s that provides insight into the complexity and dynamism of containerized environments,” in a statement. “Sysdig’s technology is helping advance the container industry by bringing production quality tools to make containers easier to understand and use.”

Accel partner Ping Li noted that Sysdig’s technology could help businesses clear some major hurdles to widespread container adoption. “Container technology is exploding, as many realize. But despite the many advantages, teams are hesitant to deploy into production,” he said. “Now, Sysdig has developed a solution that fixes a critical blocker – monitoring and visibility.”

Sysdig Cloud is available now. Standard plans start at $20 per host per month with support for up to 20 containers per host and reporting for 100 custom metrics.
