SEATTLE — Amazon Web Services (AWS) and BMW Group are working together on software to collect data from “millions” of connected vehicles.
AWS and BMW Group formed a “strategic collaboration” to develop a customizable cloud-based vehicle data platform to help manage and distribute data from vehicles, according to AWS last month.
As the first automaker to use the jointly developed software that will be part of the AWS for Automotive line, BMW will be a foundation for the “next-generation” auto industry technology.
Other automakers will be able to integrate the software to add vehicle data sources, speed up vehicle and fleet application features, and extend life cycle management. The software will be designed to help automakers add advanced features and personalize the driver experience.
The software will process and route vehicle data in the cloud “in accordance” with data privacy requirements and customer preferences.
BMW’s domain experts will have self-serve access to the data, including software developers, data scientists, fleet managers, and artificial intelligence (AI) and business intelligence (BI) team members.
The BMW team will use various AWS offerings to work with the data, such as analytics, machine learning (ML), databases, storage, and compute.
The software will also help support the development of electric and autonomous vehicles.

BMW Group has 20 million connected vehicles on the road.
“With the launch of the ‘Neue Klasse,’ BMW’s next generation of vehicles, our offboard cloud platform, powered by AWS, will process roughly triple the volume of vehicle data compared to the current generation of BMW models,” said Nicolai Krämer, VP of vehicle connectivity platforms, BMW Group.
“Together with AWS, we will continue to create innovative solutions that enable us to develop and deliver new data-driven functions to customers worldwide, even faster.”
Rapid data-fueled innovation is “critical to unlocking next-generation vehicle capabilities for automotive organizations, particularly as the industry looks to expand electric vehicle adoption, software-defined vehicle development, new digital service paradigms, and more autonomous vehicle features,” said Sarah Cooper, GM of AWS industry products.
“By teaming up with the BMW Group, we are building infrastructure today that will generate value for the next generation of vehicles,” Cooper said.
Over the past year, AWS has been active in several other industries, including:
