This year’s IT salary, the backstory:

The IT salary picture for 2015 is decidedly rosy. Knowledgeable tech workers are in great demand, which means companies need to offer big paychecks to hire the IT talent they need. Following up on last year’s positive pay trends, tech pros now hold the position of power in the hiring market.

And if you’re an IT professional who specializes in any of the “big three” – mobile, Big Data, or security – you can command a truly hefty paycheck. Mobile and Big Data are part of the much ballyhooed “Third Platform” that is revolutionizing data center deployment. And security? The headlines about breeches won’t stop. Company everywhere are realizing, “We need more (or better) IT security professionals!”

Other hot tech careers: software developers, in particular mobile application developers. Software developers are seeing their salaries jump a robust 7.2 percent over last year. Mobile app developers are enjoying an eyepopping10.2 percent increase. Yes, it turns out this smartphone thing is more than a fad.

What’s truly remarkable about these healthy pay raises is how rare they are in the larger job market. Overall salary levels have not kept up with inflation. So IT professionals are doing better and better relative to other workers around them. IT approaches the ranks of law, business and finance as a pathway to upper tier pay packages. For top tech talent, their compensation is clearly at par with other leading earners.

And this trend toward healthy IT salary levels will likely only increase, due to one inevitable fact: the role of technology is growing in every nook and cranny of society. Without tech experts, everything stops. Remember that the next time you negotiate your pay package.
