ARMONK, N.Y. and BENGALURU, India — Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is tapping IBM to create a new “airport-in-a-box” platform to help transform the travel experience for airline passengers.

BIAL — the operator of Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIAB/BLR) or BLR Airport — entered a 10-year agreement with IBM for digital transformation, according to IBM last month.

BLR Airport needs a “nimble” and scalable technology and operations environment to increase its “agility and operational flexibility to handle future growth in passenger traffic.”

IBM Global Business Services, IBM hybrid cloud capabilities, and Kyndryl — the new independent company that will be created following the separation of IBM’s Managed Infrastructure Services business — will design and implement a “next-generation architecture” for BIAL.

IBM is developing the platform to help BIAL improve employee productivity, reduce costs through streamlined inventory control, and improve incident management.

The platform will feature a comprehensive set of IBM technology and services, an open hybrid cloud approach, and  be supported by Red Hat Ansible Automation. It will also generate artificial intelligence (AI)-powered insights from IBM Maximo enterprise asset management technology to optimize inventory management and total cost of ownership.

IBM and BIAL are planning to eventually explore opportunities to advance the airport-in-a-box platform as “a cornerstone” for transformation in the global travel and transportation industries.

“Our aim is to introduce more digitally advanced, innovative services, and products at BIAL, to ensure that the passengers and partners have the advantage of future forward technologies, in a seamless operating environment.” said Hari Marar, managing director and CEO, BIAL.

The long-term project capitalizes on IBM’s ability to “deliver a combination of advanced technologies and services,” said Mark Foster, SVP, IBM Services and IBM Global Business Services.
